This CAM treasure trove manages 650,000 tools

Sindelfingen, 12. September 2016 - The path to Industry 4.0: Technology Manager from Janus and the ToolsUnited web service automate tool resourcing.

Resourcing digital tools is now simpler than ever for CAM programmers: the Technology Manager from Janus provides very easy access under NX CAM to Tools United – a web service which contains 650,000 tools from 26 manufacturers in standardised format. The CAM treasure trove lowers the costs of tool resourcing by 65% and prepares companies to meet the requirements of Industry 4.0.

When NX CAM programmers fill their digital tool library, they often hit on the following problem. Tool manufacturers define their tools by parameters which are not compatible with NX – for example, they specify the point angle for a milling cutter instead of the point length. This means that the programmer must convert the parameters or even resort to the use of a calliper gauge . It not only costs time, in particular in prototyping which constantly depends on new instruments, it also means an error source due to manual modification. Is this necessary? No! There is an alternative.

Technology Manager from Janus accesses 650,000 tools

Janus relieves the work of CAM programmers with the Technology Manager – an add-on for tool management running under NX CAM from Siemens. It accesses the ToolsUnited web service from the company Cimsource. The service provides 650,000 tools from 26 manufacturers in standardised format (DIN 4000) which a programmer can then place in his digital tool library and import them into NX CAM with one mouse click. He can then apply the tools immediately – both in the form of parameters as well as in a 3D model. Technology data such as feeds and rotational speeds are integrated. At last, laborious and cost-intensive modifications are now a thing of the past.

Costs for tool procurement down by 65%

The return on investment for the web service is quickly recovered. “Experience shows that the costs for this service is less than 35 percent of what companies would normally have to calculate for data production,” says Werner Karp, CEO of JANUS Engineering AG. “Such cost and time savings help industrial companies prepare to meet the requirements of Industry 4.0, which strives to produce ever larger quantities of workpieces in ever smaller batches.”

Janus Engineering at the AMB 2016 in Stuttgart

Janus Engineering is exhibiting at the International Exhibition for Metalworking (AMB) 2016 in Stuttgart (Siemens stand C12 in Hall 4). There, software tools will be on view for the NX solution portfolio from Siemens which assists companies to prepare for Industry 4.0 by automating production processes.
