NX CAM Release 2212

The major new enhancements in the 2212 release of NX for Manufacturing

Siemens Digital Industries Software has set the stage for a successful start to 2023 with the NX 2212 release. Powerful new capabilities to automate CAM programming, innovative machine strategies, AI-powered processes, and better connectivity to the shop floor offer manufacturers new opportunities to increase productivity. We even tested one innovation on the machine for you.

3D Adaptive Roughing

With the 3D Adaptive Roughing operation, which replaces the Adaptive Milling* operation, a high-speed roughing strategy for efficiently removing large amounts of material has been integrated into NX. Improvements include dynamic toolholder collision checking, bottom-up cutting, thin wall option and flat surfaces machining with an adaptive pattern.

*The previously known Adaptive Milling operation is still available under the cam_legacy template.

Guiding Curves

The Guiding Curves operation has been revised with NX Release 2212 and extended with two new milling pattern types: "morph by center path" and "offset by center path". These milling patterns use the center axis, which is defined by the topological center of the cutting area. Instead of defining manual guide curves, programmers can use the center axis to create offset or morphed toolpaths automatically, realizing the most efficient machining for each part.

Face Mill Mid-Pass

Face Mill Mid-Pass is a new sub-type of face milling that machine selected surfaces using cutting patterns. It is recommended for machining complex flat surfaces, such as mating surfaces on machine housings.

The single machining operation can be created using either the centerline or convex hull of the selected surface. This new feature also includes options for pattern offset, direction, starting point and bypass. Holes are ignored by default however, it is possible to cut around the holes, as well as define an offset. It can even show the uncut material using the In-Process Workpiece (IPW) technology.

The prerequisite for this operation is that the tool can cover the complete surface.

Turn-Milling

Turn-Milling is a 4-axis milling operation of Rotary Milling and offers a new cutting strategy for cylindrical and conical parts. It simplifies programming of parts with symmetric and eccentric surfaces. Advanced settings, including axial and radial limits, engagement types and cut sequencing, help you create optimal toolpaths for your applications. You can program both roughing and finishing operations with many tool types.

How this new type of operation can be applied in detail, we have tested for you.

Turning Threads IPW

The Turning Threads IPW display enables accurate and realistic simulation of material removal during thread turning. The detailed representation of the machining process allows programmers to validate threading operations quickly and accurately.

Automatic toolpath generation through AI-assisted programming

NX CAM's AI-assisted programming speeds up the programming process by suggesting parameters that you frequently use in your workflows. However, this technology not only supports the programming of new operations, but also helps you edit existing operations. For example, the toolpath is automatically generated after a parameter change, without you having to press the Generate button again. This makes it easier to adjust the operation and check the change during programming.

Post Hub machine installation

NX provides an integrated access to the Post Hub and can be searched for machines. Post processors can also be found online in Post Hub and downloaded or requested for purchase.

The new NX CAM Wire EDM Advanced add-on provides industry-leading functionality for programming a wide range of wire EDM machines. It provides direct access to machine tool technology databases for all popular wire EDM machines, including Agie-Charmilles, Mitsubishi and Fanuc.

NX CMM Inspection Programming

The NX CMM Inspection Programming enhancements enable greater automation and integration in the CNC programming phase. With the "Automatic Scanning" function, you can now generate scanning paths automatically. This not only reduces programming effort, but also helps you standardize your inspection strategies.

Other improvements in NX inspection programming include interactive programming of multipoint inspection paths and automation of programming using Model-Based Definition (MBD).

NX On-Machine Probing

NX On-Machine Probing is a brand-new module integrated in NX CAM. You can program inspections based on your 3D part. You simply create the operation in NX with the desired parameters and already in the definition you can see in real time the toolpath of the probing.

Of course, you can output this as a cycle in the NC program via the post processor and simulate it in the machine simulation.

A beta version is available for download in the Post Hub.
