At this year's Hermle in-house exhibition, we collaborated with “Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG” to produce a real Sparta helmet. Find out how it started, what special requirements the programming of the complex Sparta helmet entailed, and how the helmet ends up being real.
JANUS and Hermle bring Sparta to life
How a Sparta helmet becomes real
From the idea to implementation
What can Siemens NX do that other programs cannot? This is a question that we answer again and again at trade fairs and exhibitions. In order to make the advantages and diverse possibilities of Siemens NX tangible, our employee Heinrich Flaum also showed some workpieces programmed with Siemens NX at the Hermle in-house exhibition 2020, for example a Sparta helmet in miniature format, printed directly on site with a 3D printer.
As it was Hermles exhibition, Hermle was also given such a Sparta helmet in miniature format by JANUS as a present. This gave rise to the idea: why not bring a "real" Sparta helmet to life? JANUS has the necessary software and is an expert in programming NX, Hermle has the suitable machine - why not make the Sparta helmet real in real size at the next in-house exhibition?
Said - Done!
So it came that we wanted to present a real Sparta helmet at the Hermle in-house exhibition 2022!
Programming with Siemens NX
JANUS Engineering AG programmed the Sparta helmet with Siemens NX, of course.
With a very long tool we had to enter a very deep area of the helmet. In doing so, we had to pay very close attention so that we did not create a collision. But thanks to the NC text-based simulation within NX, we were able to identify these endangered areas in advance and correct them accordingly, so that there was no collision on the real machine.
In one of our QuickTips, we use the Sparta helmet to show you how tilting and adding an approach path with Siemens NX looks like on a milling machine.

The Sparta helmet becomes real
The Sparta helmet was then manufactured live at the Hermle in-house exhibition 2022 using the Hermle C42 U dynamic in a 5-axis version.
